Easter is the most important church celebration in Bulgaria. On this day all Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The week before Easter is called Holy Week, saturated with different beliefs and rituals.

On Holy Thursday we prepare the dough for the ritual breads that are made on Friday or Saturday. Ritual cakes are rich in decoration and must attend one or more red eggs.

On Holy Friday, the day on which Jesus was crucified, is forbidden to work: it is believed that the work on this day will only bring trouble. Believers go to church to bow to a shroud symbolizing the sheet, in which was wrapped and buried Jesus Christ.

On Holy Saturday eggs are painted as the first should be red, symbolizing the resurrection and the blood of Jesus. The oldest woman in the family paints the first egg and makes the sign of the cross on the foreheads of children first and then the other members of the family, for health. Then the egg is placed before the icon of the Virgin Mary and is kept until the next Easter. In some parts, the egg is buried in the farm lands, for prosperity and to protect the crops. Saturday evening, at midnight with bell ringing and candles, Christian believers welcome Easter and greet with "Christ is Risen" and "indeed risen."

The next day relatives and friends shall be distributed eggs and ritual breads for peace of the souls of the deceased.
